A Two in One Day

Today is the last day of March and there were a few "first of the month" challenges left on Scrap 'N Chat to do before the new April challenges come out tomorrow. And since I am playing the role of leisurely woman today, I am hitting all that I can.

I combined the One Little Word challenge with the Weekend Blitz challenge. For OLW we were to use the word "close". My quote is a great one by Elizabeth Bowen,"Autumn arrives in early morning, but spring at the close of a winter day." I thought it was a great quote to go along with the gorgeous flowers I saw on my recent trip to Savannah, GA.

The Weekend Blitz challenge asked us to get messy and create our own patterned paper with misting paint and a splatter technique. I extended the technique by dragging a fork through the paint as well.

On the Color Challenge, Diana gave us a color palate to work with:

and here is how I interpreted it:

And my final layout for today is the Double Dawg Dare Ya Challenge. We had to use spray mists, bows and arrows. I found this sketch in a Creative Keepsakes magazine from March/April 2010. I loved the design and felt it would really compliment the Girl Scout Patch..

Trying something new is a good thing

This weekend we were challenged to make a mosaic piece to add to a layout or card at Scrap 'N Chat. I had never done one of these before, so I checked out the Tim Holtz website for a tutorial. I started off small making a heart with scrap paper and a die-cut shape. I then added some dimensional medium to make it stand out. I really like the way it came out, so I have a feeling I will be making a few more. Come over to Scrap 'N Chat and see what other kinds of challenges we have available this month.

Weekend Blitz, Part 1

Over at Scrap 'N Chat, we are having a weekend extravaganza to kick off our new scrapping website. Part 1 started tonight and we have other fun activities in store for the rest of the weekend too. Stop by and see what we are doing. And while you are there, sign up to join the fun and become a part of our community.

Tonight's project required three 3x3 photos and included this sketch:

My interpretation came out like this:

I wonder what you could do with this sketch!!!

I'm not taking any flap about it...

Welcome to our first ad/art challenge here at Scrap ‘N Chat!!! (applause inserted here) Thank you for joining me this month. I am Resa, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island………………… oops! wrong intro!!

I have been having fun with this category for a couple of years now here and there and everywhere and love to find a way to take a different spin on this category. This month is no exception. So without further ado, away we go….

You know when you get your favorite magazine in the mail and it has all those flaps that hide things.
Maybe it’s a perfume sample.
Maybe it’s a coupon.
Maybe it’s information from the surgeon general on the healthiness of the product.
Here are a couple of examples:

Whatever the case may be, there is a flap there hiding something, just waiting for you to open it.

So for our challenge this month, use a flap. It can be anywhere on your page hiding additional photos, or a long journaling prompt, or statistics on your current height, weight, whatever you want. Just show us your flap and don’t give me any flap about it.

Until next time...

I had some spare time...

...so I did a sketch challenge. This one is from the *NEW* scrap forum, Scrap 'N Chat.  This is a pagemaps sketch posted on the Pebbles blog. This was the very first sketch challenge to get all our feet wet on the Scrap 'N Chat site.

I love these photos of the boys making scary faces.

A Scrapping Moment

Now a messsage from our leader, Pat at Scrapping the Moments:

We are having an open call for 2 people to join our Design Team @ Scrapping the Moments.
We are a small, friendly,  scrap booking/paper crafting community.

We need someone to head up the weekly photography challenge.  You do not need to be a professional photographer to do this. But we would like someone who is excited about taking photos & knows their way around their camera. You would have to come up with a weekly idea of what we should photograph.
You can see what we have been doing here http://www.scrappingthemoments.com/index.php?topic=2267.0
If you are interested please send some of your photos, ideas you might have for the challenges, a little about yourself, and if you have a blog please send  a link to it, to pat@scrappingthemoments.com  by February 4,2012. If you can't post on the members board or gallery please do not apply. We are only looking for people who can participate & show interest in our community.

The 2nd position will be doing an ATC challenge. We have just started doing these & there is a lot of interest in these ATCs by our members. Only apply if you can commit to doing a monthly challenge and to participate on the message board & gallery. If interested please send some samples of your work, especially ATCs you have done & if you have a blog or gallery send a link to that also. You can send this info to pat@scrappingthemoments.com by February 4,2012.

There is no compensation at this time for our Design Team members. But there is joy from sharing our talents with others.

Aren't I just informational today?!!! LOL!!!
Until next time...

Scrapping Time!!!

I have not had very much time to scrap in the past few months and I have missed it!!! I received a slew of scrapping supplies for Christmas and I finally have some time to dig in.

This is my first Book of Me Challenge at Scrapping the Moments. This is a photo I had been waiting for a while to scrap and I finally had the piece of paper that inspired me.

The other layout I did today was for my own Ad/Art Challenge using vintage sewing advertisements. I loved the inspiration pieces. They are very obvious when you see the final product. Head over to the forum to see what other challenges went live today and join our scrapping fun.

January Ad/Art Challenge - It's SEW easy!!!
My goodness, I can't believe today is the 15th already. This month is flying by and I have totally lost track of the time!!!

Millie Motts is a blogger who professes that she is "a collector of 1940s-60s just-about-anything: fashion magazines, children's elementary school readers, textbooks, found photos, and miscellaneous ephemera." I stumbled upon her blog looking for something else and this posting of sewing machine advertisements caught my eye. http://milliemotts.blogspot.com/2009/01/just-sew-stories.html

I love the vintage, the line up of the spools, the blue and red "flags" and the shades of blue and red used in all of these advertisements. You can use any or all of the advertisements shown on Millie Motts blog post as your inspiration. These shown were my faves and what is inspiring my layout. What speaks to you? Show me by trying out this challenge and posting your project here and in the gallery. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

The rules:
Your creation can be a layout, a card, a paper craft, anything you would like to create.
You can combine this challenge with another here on the website, but if you are trying to earn a badge, please keep it separate.
You have until February 14, 2012 to post your creation here and in the gallery.
And don't forget to let us know here on the forum which piece inspired you.

Oh and where is mine, you ask? Well, like I said, January 15th sneaked up on me and I am not prepared. But I will be before the setting of the sun tonight!!

Well, it's SLIGHTLY after sunset. The hand sewing took longer than I imagined. Now show me yours!!!

Until next time...

Good New Year and Good Books to Read

I completed my book challenge on Goodreads last year to read 20 books. Actually I upped the anty twice during the year because I met my goals two times before the year was over. So this year I have increased my amount of books to be read to 25 but I am adding another challenge to the mix.

The rules are easy for this one.

  • Challenge will run January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
  • Chose your own books from the list.  I am using the 266 suggestion list instead of the Top 25 as I have read a number of them already.
  • All forms of books acceptable (audiobooks, eBooks, etc.) YAY NOOK!!!
  • You don't need a blog to participate.
I am setting my sights on "Level II - Read 10 books", but as with last year, I may have to adjust it up as I go. I never know what we will be reading in Book Club. Feel free to join along!!!

Until next time...

Scrapping The Moments Ad/Art Challenge!!!!

Happy Holidays!!! I am quite the collector of vintage advertisement signs. The ones I am the most fond of are The Coca-Cola Santas. Here is a little history for you from the Coca-Cola website:

"Most people can agree on what Santa Claus looks like -- jolly, with a red suit and a white beard. But he did not always look that way, and Coca-Cola® advertising actually helped shape this modern-day image of Santa. 2006 marked the 75th anniversary of the famous Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Starting in 1931, magazine ads for Coca-Cola featured St. Nick as a kind, jolly man in a red suit. Because magazines were so widely viewed, and because this image of Santa appeared for more than three decades, the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on our advertising.

The Coca-Cola Company began its Christmas advertising in the 1920s with shopping-related ads in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post. The first Santa ads used a strict-looking Claus, in the vein of Thomas Nast. At this time, many people thought of Coca-Cola as a drink only for warm weather. The Coca-Cola Company began a campaign to remind people that Coca-Cola was a great choice in any month. This began with the 1922 slogan "Thirst Knows No Season," and continued with a campaign connecting a true icon of winter -- Santa Claus -- with the beverage.

The first Coca-Cola Santa Claus image created by artist Haddon Sunblom appeared in 1931 in The Saturday Evening Post. From 1931 to 1964, Coca-Cola advertising showed Santa delivering (and playing!) with toys, pausing to read a letter and enjoy a Coke, playing with children who stayed up to greet him and raiding the refrigerators at a number of homes. The original oil paintings Sundblom created were adapted for Coca-Cola advertising in magazines, store displays, billboards, posters, calendars and even plush dolls. Many of those items today are popular collectibles."

So I can just bet that you know what your inspiration for Ad/Art is this month.

Yep!! It's those gosh-darn, cutie pie Coke Santas!!!!

Here is a website or two for you to check out to find your inspiration piece:
http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/heritage/cokelore_santa.html
http://www.fortunecity.com/millennium/hibiscus/121/cokesanta.html
http://coca-cola-art.com/2008/11/25/coca-cola-christmas-santa-claus-haddon-sundblom/

Or better yet, just head over to Google and image search "Coca Cola Santa." Hundreds of photos come up.

Your creation can be a layout, a card, a paper craft, anything you would like to create.
It does NOT have to be a Christmas themed creation.
You can combine this challenge with another here on the website, but if you are trying to earn a badge, please keep it separate.
You have until January 14, 2012 to post your creation here and in the gallery.
And don't forget to let us know on the forum which piece inspired you.

I hope you all have a great time exploring some advertising memorabilia from the past!!!

Here is my inspiration and my sample:

The 12 Days of Christmas

At Scrapping the Moments it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas when  you peek into the gallery. We had a challenge to add one thing to a layout everyday for the first 12 days of the month. It goes something like the song:

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my scrappy friend gave to me,

a 12x12 piece of plain colored cardstock and 3 (2x2) pieces of patterned paper,
two pieces of trim.
1 or 2 pics.
some stitching.
1 journaling spot.
1 piece of holly!
a two word title.
a stamped christmas word.
some cute little snowflakes.
a sprinkle of glitter!
a Christmas die-cut!
a touch of confetti!

And here's mine!!!!

The Gratitude Journal

For November on Scrapping the Moments, we have been working on a gratitude project which involved us using a photo and journaling for 23 days this month about what we were grateful for. I decided to do a mini album. It took many more hours than I planned, but here are the results.
