The Help

The HelpThe Help by Kathryn Stockett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is about segregation in Mississippi in the 1960's. Eugenia Phelan gets together with a group of black women who work as hired help to the prominent white women in the town of Jackson, Mississippi. They decide that they can affect the segregation movement by writing a tell all book detailing how the help's lives are affected by their jobs and how their jobs affect the ladies they wait on. There are many tense moments in the book as well as love and tenderness in a moment of time in our history that was violent and dangerous for black people living in the south.

I feel the book was well written as it was playing in my head like a movie reel with each turn of the page. It made me feel sorry for the women who had to endure these struggles and ashamed for how they had to endure it all in the first place. This was a wonderful book and I will suggest it to all my friends as a wonderful read.

A visit to the Zografos Gallery

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the Yiasou Greek Festival here in Charlotte, NC. While there I encountered a third generation artist who paints wonderful watercolors of Greece and it's people. Pantelis D. Zografos, also known as The Greek Artist on his website, paints memories from his childhood and refurbishes paintings of the men in his family that came before him. I love the bright and vivid colors and the street scenes. So for the month of September, I would like you to look over his website and find something that inspires you.

Do you like to watercolor?

Do sidewalk cafes and narrow city streets strike your fancy?

Do you long to float around in a boat on calm water?

You won't know until you take a look………….. http://www.thegreekartist.com/home/

Make sure to come back to the Scrapping the Moments thread to post your project as well as in the gallery there. It does not have to be a layout. Any old project will do. Let us know which painting inspired you and why. Looking forward to seeing where the watercolors take you.

I decided I liked the colors and the scene so well in this painting, I would use it as the focus for my layout. It is stored in my 10 x 10 Book of Me with a note on how stressful the summer of 2011 has been for me and how I wish the artist would just paint me into the watercolor sitting in that little chair with a nice cup of coffee and a book.

Scrapping The Moments - OH YEAH!! - Back to School Blog Hop!!!

Hey there ya’ll!! If you have been hopping around all day, you have reached the end of your travels. My blog is the last stop on

Scrapping The Moments Back to School – OH  YEAH!! Blog Hop

You should have arrived here from Pat’s Color Challenge. But if you missed some of the talented design team’s blogs, you can just hop back to the beginning at Jess’s OLW Challenge by clicking HERE!! or click on the links below.

Around our forum I am the ad/art challenge designer. I like to try and inspire our members by showcasing different artists and their works and encouraging our members create however the art inspires them. I love to create by putting my own spin on good design and artistic talent and hope that some of their talent rubs off on me, LOL!!

Here is our most recent Ad/Art Challenge.  And lucky for you, we are still accepting entries on this one until September 14th. I am offering a prize on the forum for a random winner this month, so take a look and see how Jai Studios inspires you. Then create something and join us at the forum.

*Jai Studios*
I have found another artist, quite by accident. A friend of mine referred me to look at the quilling work of Jitesh Patel. He is a design and illustration artist living in London who specializes in illustration, advertising, logo design, and art direction to a variety of clientele. When you look at his website, you will see many different types of media in his art. However for this challenge I would like you to focus your layout designs on the advertisements for Alpina Yogurt.

You can also see the images here: http://www.jiteshpatel.co.uk/blog/ along with a cool little video on 3D butterfly animation.
Also, here is another fun website dedicated to Jitesh and his work: http://www.allthingspaper.net/2011/08/jitesh-patel-quilling-artist.html?spref=fb

Recently I polled our members as to whether they knew how to quill and if you used quilling in your layouts. The results were a mixed bag. This challenge is by no means a quilling challenge. I want you to take a look at Jitesh's ads and see what you can do with them. Maybe you are inspired by the colors, the images, the manipulation of the paper. It's all up to you.

For my example I went in a totally different way. I do not know how to quill, but loved the images I saw and decided to embroider them onto paper. I have not undergone a sewing project in this detail for my scrapping albums. And boy, my little thumb and fingers are feeling the ache today, LOL!! But I love the end results.

I hope you all get the opportunity to stop by Scrapping the Moments this month and join us to take a look at this artist and feel inspired to create something of your own. I would love to see what you come up with.

If you are truly at the end of your hopping adventure today, the design team and I would like to thank you for looking. We hope you will join us on the forum and join in the fun. We have a whole bunch of talented gals and we look forward to sharing and learning from you.

Check your list twice to see that you did not miss anything on the hop. And while you are at it, go ahead and follow me as I will be giving a small  RAK  to a random reader here as well. Just leave a comment with a link back to you  by Tuesday, September 6, 2011 and you may be hearing from me.
